Where does the coffee in our personal coffee maker comes from?

Coffee comes the “coffea” plant, whose seeds are harvested and roasted (turning them from green to brown), to varying degrees for flavour and taste.

Of all the coffee that is consumed in the world including the stuff we put through our personal coffee maker you would think that there was an awful lot of variety in terms of coffee bean types…Well there isn’t! Most of the coffee we drink originates from the coffee berries of just two strains of the Coffea plant:

  • Coffea Arabica, which makes up about 75% of the total coffee sold on the markets and
  • Coffea Robusta, or Canophora, which covers the other 15% or so.

Of course there are some other varieties but these are rare and infrequently traded globally, for various reasons. Examples of these other beans would be the Bengal and Congolese varieties.

The Arabica bean is widespread and has regional qualities and characteristics according to where it is grown. The Robusta is generally established in places where the Arabica finds it difficult to grow and prosper, thus proving that the Robusta is somewhat hardier and made of sterner stuff, hence the name.

These regional crops are known as “varietals” and, like wine, have become known for particular flavours and taste. The biggest growing areas in the world for coffee are South America, South East Asia and Africa.

Well known regions for the Arabica bean are Ethiopia and Kenya in Africa and Columbia and Costa Rica in South America. Another varietal that conjures up romantic images of faraway places is found in Java, one of the major Islands of Indonesia. Java has long been associated with coffee and in some places the term’ java’ came to be used as slang for coffee itself.

If you love coffee and you want that beautfiful aroma of a freshly made brew then you need a personal coffee maker!
